How to Manage Stress Effectively

 

 

There is two hours left until your deadline and you still have what feels like an insurmountable amount of work to finish. You can feel that familiar migraine creeping in and know that the effects of too much stress are starting to kick in.

 

The presence of some stress is entirely natural; in fact, it is nature’s way of making sure that you stay active and meets your responsibilities. Excessive stress, on the other hand, generally contributes to serious health ailments such as heart attacks and is a result of pressure from sources which include familial and romantic relationships, financial debt, lack of income (which contributes to financial stress), and deadlines for school and work. With so much stress coming from so many different angles, it may seem like it is impossible to manage your stress levels effectively; however, with some planning and organization, you can minimize the amount of stress you receive from your everyday life.

 

The first thing to keep in mind is that balance is key. Working non-stop to achieve your deadlines without a break will only result in your burnout and is not worth the stress that accompanies it. Break down your workload into manageable intervals.

 

Trying to fit an inordinate amount of work in all at once or worrying excessively about the bills will not solve anything for you or for the situation. Stop, take a deep breath, and walk away. The distance from the problem will give you a chance to refocus and perhaps even find a different way to approach the situation. 

 

If you still feel like you cannot overcome the stress you have as a part of your daily life, seek support from someone. There are many organizations, including most major banks, which will help you to re-evaluate your financial situation and make the sea of payments more manageable. If work from school or home is the bane of your existence, ask if your deadline can be extended or seek help from a tutor, who can make the information more palatable.

 

Finally, if you find yourself receiving inordinate amounts of stress from any relationship, walk away from the situation.

 

Currently, when everything seems to be needed yesterday, stress can seem to come at you from all angles. It is impossible to eliminate all forms of stress; however, managing what stress you have will make your life happier and your life span longer.

Four Necessary Qualities That Spells Success in Your Life

Everybody wants success in life. A certain level of personal development, personal growth and self-improvement helps you to attain goals and achieve success in your life. These factors enrich your relationships, career prospects, professional success and life in general. Personal development, personal growth and self-improvement techniques are inter-related and help you to improve your personal and professional management techniques.

1. Effective communication - Communication is the key to accomplish your goals in personal and professional life. 4. Positive attitude - A negative attitude stands as a stumbling block in anything and everything you do in life. It zaps the much-needed energy associated with attaining your goals. Winning the Rat Race: Surviving Stress

Today’s world is all about instant gratification and moving forward at a dizzying pace, and this can wreak havoc on your health. You dare not get left behind, and in your rush to catch the train or meet the deadline, your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing suffers. Sound familiar?

Though short-term stress is quite healthy and necessary to stimulate your immune system, chronic, or long-term, stress does just the opposite. Your adrenal glands release stress hormones—cortisol in particular—during taxing situations and cortisol is responsible for kicking the immune system into high gear. But when you are bombarded with stress on a continual basis, the body develops a resistance to cortisol and the immune system stops responding, leaving you vulnerable to all sorts of stress-related health problems.

The best way to counter these ill effects is to get enough rest. It is through adequate sleep (at least seven hours every night) that the rising levels of cortisol in the body can be kept in check.

Know when to give yourself a break. At the rate you’re going, you’ll work yourself right into the grave. No one will hold it against you for wanting to take a breather. Do it deeply—not just regular respiration, but actually savoring every breath. Utilize your diaphragm rather than your lungs, and count four to five seconds while inhaling through your nose, and another four to five seconds exhaling through your mouth. Then repeat the exercise ten times. Not only is this a great way to relax but it slows your heart rate and lessens anxiety. It also helps to lower blood pressure.

Another thing that does wonders for blood pressure is to own a pet. Having a canine or feline companion has been known to reduce stress and help overcome depression. Just make sure you’re not allergic.

Learn proper time management. Despite what you may think, there is no such thing as having no time. Everyone has it. Rather, it is how you budget your time that makes all the difference in the world. And if you believe your schedule is getting just a wee bit unmanageable, don’t be afraid to speak up and say so. Prioritize. You don’t have to say yes to every task thrown your way.

Manage your finances. It is a widely known fact that money problems equal a whole lot of stress. Save yourself (and your wallet) the heartache by reading helpful materials on the subject, like “The Six New Rules of Rich” by Oliver Broudy (Men’s Health, March 2007).

Clean up your act. Free yourself and your living space from clutter. Get rid of eyesores you’ve accumulated through the years. Give whatever you no longer need to charity.

Speaking of charity, be more involved in social or civic work. When you expose yourself to the hardships of others, your own problems will seem less burdensome and you will have more courage and energy to face them.

If it can be helped at all, try to stay away from stressful situations. You may be able to give your life some semblance of order, but outside factors could just as easily destroy what you have worked so hard to build. Keep your cool. If you find yourself losing your temper over the slightest altercation, count to ten before retaliating. This will give you time to calm down and address the problem in a more rational manner. Lessen noise. If you can’t do that, then don’t contribute to it. Avoid toxic people as their condition is highly contagious. Of course, we don’t recommend you duck under a table or run for your life each time you cross paths, but don’t allow their overanxious nature to encroach on your own unstressed disposition.

The frenetic rat race that human progress has become exacts a high price, and the finish line is as elusive as ever. But perhaps this is one race where the ideal would be to slow down.

Activities That Will Help Relieve Stress

Some people think that it’s almost impossible to find an outlet while under stress. Most stressed individuals think that doing fun activities will not reduce the effect of problems that they tackle under career, social or personal pressure – which is a very poor way to get cope or rid them of it.

Therapist around the world agree that certain activities like games, sports and art can great affect a stressed persons physical and behavioral problems. Some of them are even employed in stress management clinics and is part of the routine treatment in helping individuals cope with their stress issue.

Mind games

Since stress will first affect the mental functions of an individual, it is very important to teach the person focus his mind on positive thoughts rather than dwelling on negative ones. Mind games offer an alternative which will allow a stress person to divert this thought patterns to something more productive. These clinics encourage their patients to tackle crossword puzzles and sudoku to help them cope with stress.

Logical functions are put to the test by introducing the Rubik’s Cube, Scrabble, and Bridge, into their curriculum. If you have no plans of visiting these centers to deal with stress, you can easily incorporate these games into your daily routine to give your mind some diversion from problems.

Sports

Engaging in sports is a great way to relieve stress. The physical exercise that your body needs to balance biological and muscular functions can rejuvenate those muscles that are tight due to the effects of stress. Playing sports can also provide an outlet for emotional problems like anxiety, depression, irritation, anger, and so on.

There are two kinds of sports a person can engage on his or her own free time. They can opt for team sports like basketball, soccer or volleyball which provides socializing functions and exercise. Individual sports like badminton, golf and tennis can also be a great help in focusing your mind to win the game rather than feeling useless under all the extra problems.

Workout

A visit to the gym may prove to be beneficial to your emotional, mental and physical health when under the influence of stress. The routine exercise your gym instructor will give you can help your mind focus on the tasks at hand. The strenuous activities can develop your muscles which improves your body’s coping mechanism to stress, and allows the body to release chemicals and hormones that is beneficial to your physiological well-being.

Cardiovascular workout can improve your heart and strengthen it to avoid stress related problems like strokes, high-blood pressure, chest pains and rapid heart beat. Due to the steady circulation in your system will benefit your muscles because of the fresh oxygen supply provided by these hearty fluids.

Note however that working out at the gym needs proper diet as well since your physical attributes will be worked to the limit to help fight off stress. Fresh fruits and vegetables are necessary improves digestion and supplies the body with the required nutrients it needs. Red meat devoid of fat can give your muscles proteins that will strengthen muscle tissues for added flexibility.

A healthy dose of mental activities, physical exercise coupled with a balance diet can help a person avoid the signs and symptom of stress and will be on the road to recovery to a stress free life.

Your 7 days program to Stress management

They say there’s more than one way to skin a cat. The same goes when you start tearing your hair out with all the frustration, grief, anxiety, and yes, stress. It’s a state of mental conditioning that is like taking that bitter pill down your throat, causing you to lose your sense of self, and worse your sanity. Just thinking about it can drive anyone off the edge.

And they say that the proactive ones are already living off the edge.

As one stressed-out person to another, I know how it feels, and believe me there are many variants when it comes to stress. Coping with life, and carrying the problems that may or may not belong to you can scratch away the little joy and happiness that you can carry once you head out that door. You can’t blame them for being like that; they have their own reasons, so much like we have our reasons to allow stress to weigh us down. They say that stress is all in the mind, well, what’s bugging you anyway?

There are several ways to manage stress, and eventually remove it out of your life one of these days. So I’ll try to divide it into a seven-day course for you and I promise it’s not going to be too taxing on the body, as well as on the mind.

1. Acknowledge stress is good
Make stress your friend! Based on the body’s natural “fight or flight” response, that burst of energy will enhance your performance at the right moment. I’ve yet to see a top sportsman totally relaxed before a big competition. Use stress wisely to push yourself that little bit harder when it counts most.You can do it.

2. Avoid stress sneezers
Stressed people sneeze stress germs indiscriminately and before you know it, you are infected too!

Protect yourself by recognizing stress in others and limiting your contact with them. Or if you’ve got the inclination, play stress doctor and teach them how to better manage themselves.

3. Learn from the best
When people around are losing their head, who keeps calm? What are they doing differently? What is their attitude? What language do they use? Are they trained and experienced?
Figure it out from afar or sit them down for a chat. Learn from the best stress managers and copy what they do.

4. Practice socially acceptable heavy breathing
This is something I’ve learned from a gym instructor: You can trick your body into relaxing by using heavy breathing. Breathe in slowly for a count of 7 then breathe out for a count of 11. Repeat the 7-11 breathing until your heart rate slows down, your sweaty palms dry off and things start to feel more normal.

5. Give stressy thoughts the red light
It is possible to tangle yourself up in a stress knot all by yourself. “If this happens, then that might happen and then we’re all up the creek!” Most of these things never happen, so why waste all that energy worrying needlessly?

Give stress thought-trains the red light and stop them in their tracks. Okay so it might go wrong - how likely is that, and what can you do to prevent it?

6. Know your trigger points and hot spots
Presentations, interviews, meetings, giving difficult feedback, tight deadlines…. My heart rate is cranking up just writing these down!

Make your own list of stress trigger points or hot spots. Be specific. Is it only presentations to a certain audience that get you worked up? Does one project cause more stress than another? Did you drink too much coffee?

Knowing what causes you stress is powerful information, as you can take action to make it less stressful. Do you need to learn some new skills? Do you need extra resources? Do you need to switch to decaf?

7. Burn the candle at one end
Lack of sleep, poor diet and no exercise wreaks havoc on our body and mind. Kind of obvious, but worth mentioning as it’s often ignored as a stress management technique. Listen to your mother and don’t burn the candle at both ends!

So having stress can be a total drag, but that should not hinder us to find the inner peace of mind that we have wanted for a long time. In any case, one could always go to the Bahamas and bask under the summer sun.
